“America the Beautiful.” Image from Norman Rockwell
The Golden Rule, a painting by Norman Rockwell, 1961
What does an American look like? Like all of the people, young and old, in this painting.
Last night I heard a talk on C-Span by Yeonmi Park, a young woman who escaped North Korea. The story of her life there, and here, is remarkable.
It is sobering with moments of humor. Filled with sincere joy at becoming an American citizen and with a warning. Her book is called, “While Time Remains“.
As she demonstrates, America, even with all of its faults, is still the land of opportunity.
Sometimes we need to see that view through someone else’s eyes.
Most of us know only the first stanza of America the Beautiful.
The others are just as moving and majestic in their own right.
Now we look to the 2nd half of 2023 and whatever it brings – Markets up or down? FED tightening or not? Elon and Mark cage fighting or sparing?
In the Spirit of Joy and the many opportunities for abundance disguised as problems, here is the poem that became the song.
The words remind and inspire us all to be our best selves. In doing so we create prosperity for ourselves and for those around us.
AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL
Katherine Lee Bates (1895)
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!!
Are you a Buy and Hold investor? How long do you hold?
There is a misconception about Trend Following investors, it is, that we don’t believe in Buying and Holding.
We still Buy and Hold. In fact, we prefer it, but only as long as the stock is trending. Then we sell.
In most cases we buy another stock. But when it comes to stocks we like long term, we use the Trending Stocks Watch List to wait for the trend to form and buy back in. Buying back in at a lower price allows us to buy more shares.
Some are small winners and some are big. There are small losers – but Not big ones!
We Always manage risk. We didn’t know how to do that before. Now we do. And you do to.
Trending Stocks can help.
The goal is always to ride the winners and cut the losses by using the risk management process.
Buy stocks that are trending, use Stop Loss orders (static or trailing), keep your position size reasonable; the Trade Risk Calculator can help. Trending Stocks calculates all of this for you.
At Trending Stocks, we believe the Trend Following strategy to be very powerful. We endeavor to develop the tools to make it accessible and easy to use for the individual investor.
